OUR REF. † AYB001018
GENERAL
The Orwell Corinthian is a modern interpretation of H C Smith’s 1898 design for the Orwell Corinthian yacht club. In the early days 10 of these craft were based on the Orwell and 6 on the Crouch (these last being known as the Crouch One designs).
By 1996, only “Raffles” remained in commission, and so a mould was taken from “May” to form the first of the modern versions, The “First of May”
To make it easier to trail, the original fixed long keel was replaced with a lifting bulb arrangement. At the same time, it was decided to revert back to the gaff rig from the tall Bermudan rig adopted in the 1930’s, and with the reduction in weight enabled by modern materials, the modern Orwell Corinthians are versatile, fast and responsive.
As well as competing in and around her home area of the river Deben in Suffolk, “First of April” has sailed successfully in the Solent, on the Clyde and the Morbihan Semaine du Golfe.
